چکیده

[1] We present the first high resolution, approximately 4 years sample spacing, precipitation record from northeastern Brazil (hereafter referred to as ‘Nordeste’) covering the last 3000 yrs from Th-dated stalagmites oxygen isotope records. Our record shows abrupt fluctuations in rainfall tied to variations in the intensity of the South American summer monsoon (SASM), including the periods corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA), the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and an event around 2800 yr B.P. Unlike other monsoon records in southern tropical South America, dry conditions prevailed during the LIA in the Nordeste. Our record suggests that the region is currently undergoing drought conditions that are unprecedented over the past 3 millennia, rivaled only by the LIA period. Using spectral, wavelet and cross-wavelet analyses we show that changes in SASM activity in the region are mainly associated with variations of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and to a lesser degree caused by fluctuations in tropical Pacific SST. Our record also shows a distinct periodicity around 210 years, which has been linked to solar variability. Citation: Novello, V. F., et al. Climate variations of Central Asia on orbital to millennial timescales

The extent to which climate variability in Central Asia is causally linked to large-scale changes in the Asian monsoon on varying timescales remains a longstanding question. Here we present precisely dated high-resolution speleothem oxygen-carbon isotope and trace element records of Central Asia's hydroclimate variability from Tonnel'naya cave, Uzbekistan, and Kesang cave, western China. On orb...

Past Climate Variability in South America and Surrounding Regions

Paleorainfall variability on orbital and millennial time scales is discussed for the last glacial period and the Holocene, based on a multi-proxy study of speleothem records from Brazil. Oxygen isotope (δ18O) records from Botuverá and Santana caves, precisely dated by U-series methods, indicate stronger summer monsoon circulation in subtropical Brazil during periods of high summer insolation in...

Major shifts in multidecadal moisture variability in the Mid‐Atlantic region during the last 240 years

[1] The paucity of high‐resolution paleoclimate records limits our ability to extend instrumental data into a longer time‐frame and to better understand multidecadal climate variations in the Mid‐Atlantic region. Here we present an ∼2 year‐resolution endogenic calcite dO record for the last ∼240 years from a freeze core at White Lake in northern New Jersey. The dO data, consistent with the pale...

Western Indian Ocean marine and terrestrial records of climate variability: a review and new concepts on land–ocean interactions since

We examine the relationship between three tropical and two subtropical western Indian Ocean coral oxygen isotope time series to surface air temperatures (SAT) and rainfall over India, tropical East Africa and southeast Africa. We review established relationships, provide new concepts with regard to distinct rainfall seasons, and mean annual temperatures. Tropical corals are coherent with SAT ov...
